~ Become a crime fighter for the day and investigate a crime scene to identify the culprit! ~
The Dr Anna Does curriculum theme of ‘Forensics’ fits into the ‘What do Scientists do’ and ‘Super scientists’ sections that pull together the ‘Working Scientifically’ statements from the National Curriculum. To help the children explore science in the workplace, Dr Anna Does has put together a session that pulls together practical scientific methodologies, processes and skills required to investigate a crime scene. By using the four STEM elements with an extension section, we aim to enhance the children’s understanding of forensics, building on the school’s usual scientific investigations of asking simple questions and noting that they can be answered in different ways, observe situations with specialised equipment, identify and classify the results gained and use these different observations to convict a suspect. So, while Dr Anna Does will show that scientists act independently to use crime scene DNA, the children will also see how many diverse roles work together to secure a conviction. The ultimate aim of this session is to promote the children’s curiosity, building on their existing knowledge, to give them a chance to experience alternative employment opportunities within their own classroom.
